Upright Bass Journal #2

Day 17.
I've been struggling with whether or not to get a teacher.  On one hand, between my books and Andrew Anderson's excellent videos, I have plenty of resources to get started.  On the other, after lurking on the talkbass forums, my concerns with going lonewolf are twofold.  Firstly, I might learn bad habits that would have to be corrected down the road.  The second is more serious.  Apparently bad form, technique, posture, etc. can potentially cause physical harm in the long-term.
That sold me, as I already experience my share of body aches and pains in my back, wrists, and shoulder, and don't need any further damage.  I have found a guy that teaches upright bass to both UGA students and 'civilians' like me.  I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, because we might not be able to coordinate our busy schedules.  I also don't want to jinx it because he seems like a perfect fit, experienced in both jazz and classical.  Hopefully we'll be able to get together in early January.  Developing...

In the meantime, I've been debating whether to keep playing despite my aforementioned concerns.  I liken this to someone giving me the keys to a new Ferrari and telling me not to drive it.  Yeah right!  I recently went to the piano store downtown and bought some rosin.  As I was checking out, I asked what was surely the novice question-of-the-day.  "Um... so how do you put rosin on the bow?"  I've managed to pull some sound out of the strings, so add another bullet to the list of stuff I need to learn.
